A Sold-Out Night at MSA & Circus Arts Chicago
Families packed the audience inside MSA & Circus Arts this spring as we presented our second annual youth production, Hit Rewind Y2K — a sold-out theatrical circus experience inspired by the music, energy, and nostalgia of the early 2000s.

Weeks before the performance date, tickets had already completely sold out, with additional families continuing to call in hopes of finding extra seats.
The production featured 20 MSA student performers ranging from ages 6 to 18 alongside professional circus acts, theatrical elements, and live music performed by students from a local music school accompanied by a professional drummer and music coach.

Young musicians performed Y2K-inspired songs including Prince’s 1999 and All The Things She Said, bringing a live concert atmosphere into the production.
At MSA & Circus Arts Chicago, we work hard to create youth productions that feel immersive, collaborative, and professional for our students.
Drawing inspiration from contemporary circus productions, our shows combine theater, dance, live music, lighting design, storytelling, and circus arts into one experience.
Through collaborations with local youth music, dance, and theater programs, we continue working to give students a more professional-style production environment and real-world stage experience at a young age.
Inside the Rehearsal Process
In the months leading up to the show, students trained through regular aerial and acrobatics classes while also spending additional rehearsal hours preparing choreography, timing, transitions, and ensemble work. Toward the final weeks, rehearsals stretched up to four hours as performers and the creative team finalized technical transitions, lighting design, staging, and show flow.

Our parent volunteers supported the long rehearsal days by bringing healthy snacks including fruit, yogurt, and vegetables for performers between practice sessions.
Young Performers Finding Confidence on Stage
The atmosphere before the show blended excitement with confidence — especially among returning performers. While audiences experienced polished performances under stage lighting, much of the transformation happened quietly through months — and for some students, years — of consistent training, rehearsals, teamwork, and mentorship.
One seven-year-old student confidently told another performer backstage, “I am not nervous because this is my second time performing. I am more excited!”
Moments like that reflect the environment many families say makes MSA special: supportive, creative, and community-centered.
Many of our students love that our programs provide a non-competitive environment where they can still work toward meaningful performance opportunities. For many kids, productions like Hit Rewind Y2K become both a creative outlet and a chance to experience what performing in a professional-style production feels like.
The sold-out turnout also reflected growing interest in community-centered youth arts experiences that give students opportunities to participate in high-level productions regardless of whether they plan to pursue the arts professionally.
A Full-Circle Moment for One Student Performer
The evening also carried emotional moments for longtime MSA families.
One graduating senior performer, who first joined MSA & Circus Arts Chicago at six years old, returned to the stage for one of her final youth performances before leaving for college. Over the years, she grew from a beginner student into both a performer and coach within the MSA community.
Her mother shared that watching the performance made her feel “teary-eyed” as she reflected on how much her daughter had grown through the program over the years.
Moments like these remind us that beyond the performances themselves, these productions often become part of students’ personal growth and childhood memories.
A Huge Thank You
None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our students, the guidance of our incredible coaches, the talent of our guest artists, and the support of our volunteers, families, and community. Your energy, effort, and enthusiasm made Hit Rewind Y2K such a memorable experience for everyone involved.
